Jan.(end)-Mar: SHIKARIBETSUKO KOTAN
“Igloo Village in Lake Shikaribetsu” (Shikaoi Town)
A small igloo village with an ice museum and an open-air hot spring suddenly pops up on the iced-over lake. Try hot air ballooning, snow trekking and other nature activities.
Feb.(5 - 12): SNOW FESTIVAL “Yuki Matsuri” (Sapporo)
Created by artists from far and wide, more than 300 snow images, draw a huge crowd of visitors to the ice world in Odori Park, Makomanai Park and Susukino area.
Feb.(mid) & Aug.(early): HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL
(Kamishihoro Town)
Above the vast Tokachi Plain about 50 big balloons, gathering from all over the nation, drift up into the sky.
Feb.(end): SHOWA SHINZAN
“International snowball fight” (Sobetsu Town)
About 190 teams of Snowball Fighters from around the world, brimming with confidence, get together to have matches and decide who will be the world champion.
Jun.(early): YOSAKOI SORAN FESTIVAL (Sapporo)
More than 370 groups numbering 38,000 people compete in the Yosakoi dance (originating from Kochi in Shikoku island) in their own style in 30 places in the city. Enthusiasm and excitement fill the city.
Jul.(early): SHIKOTSU KOSUI MATSURI
“Shikotsu Summer Festival” (Chitose)
A lot of events including dancing and music making make Hokkaido’s short but beautiful summer more fun. This Summer Festival, one of these events, starts with Toro-nagashi (floating of lighted lanterns on the water) and climaxes with fireworks at night.
Jul.(late): KUTCHAN JAZZ FESTIVAL (Kutchan Town)
The 2-day Jazz Festival is a popular highlight of summer activities attracting musicians and jazz lovers from all over Japan and around the world.
Jul.(Last Sat & Sun.): SOUUNKYO KEIKOKU HIMATSURI
“Fire Festival of Souunkyo Gorge” (Kamikawa Town)
Religious rites handed down by the Ama are held in the evening on both days, followed by a fireworks display.
Aug.(Last Sat & Sun.): SHOWA – SHINZAN HIMATSURI
“Fireworks Festival” (Tohya Town)
One of the biggest Fireworks Festival in Hokkaido. Showa- Shinzan is an active volcano and the fireworks are designed to make the volcano look as though it is exploding.
Oct.(mid): AKANKO MARIMO MATSURI
“Lake Akan Marimo Festival” (Akan Town)
The “Marimo,” a unique spherical green floating plant, in a very special one for the Ama. The Amy conducts traditional religious rites on both days to protect the Marimo. Dancing, fireworks and many attractions can also be seen.
