Hokkaido
Japan’s North Island
Hokkaido, situated just below the Sub-Artic zone, is the north island of Japan’s four main islands. It is covered by vast national parks, which are beautiful beyond description in all four seasons.
During the winter months, consistent storms move down from the Siberian desert, across Russia picking up moisture over the Sea of Japan. When these storms strike the west coast of Hokkaido, they bring some of the lightest, driest powder snow found anywhere in the world creating a unique and visually beautiful winter.
Hokkaido is entirely covered in a blanket of pure white snow during the snow season, which extends from late November to early May. Hokkaido is not expensive and is generally uncrowded. The ski resorts have a more relaxed attitude to off-piste skiing and snowboarding than other Japanese resorts increasing the amount of skiable terrain. The most reliable and consistent snowfalls occur between December and February.
